My dissertation is a transhistorical venture into the myth of Parthenope, the foundational Siren of the city of Naples, Italy. I look at ways in which the Classical past (Greek and Roman especially) has been reworked and reintegrated in different time periods in the city, before its formation as a modern city and part of the Italian nation-state. I have therefore a strong investment in European Studies, not just because of my interest in Greek and Latin cultures, but also because Naples has long been a Spanish colony (in the Medieval throughout the Early Modern age) and I investigate the city’s connections to Spanish art and politics in the Early Modern to Modern Ages. My interests lie mainly in: Italian Studies, Classical Reception Studies, Roman and Greek Studies, South European Studies, Neapolitan Studies and what is known as the “Southern Question” in Italy.
