I study labor market change and its political consequences in western Europe over the second half of the twentieth century. My work revolves around two concerns. The first has to do with the expansion of cognitive employment across advanced capitalist economies and its implications for electoral competition. The second has to do with the social costs of structural change. I examine workers’ responses to the threat of displacement and governments’ strategies for dealing with the risks associated with technological redundancy. I’m especially interested in how these strategies are shaped by existing patterns of industrial relations.
