Áine Palmer is PhD candidate working on 13th-century Francophone song culture. Her work on the trouvères and the manuscripts that transmit their songs sits at the intersection of musicological, literary, and codicological analysis. Áine’s dissertation on the Chansonnier Cangé reasses a late 13th-century songbook, revisiting the question of its unusual mensural notation and drawing attention its unique construction and compilation. In doing so, she interrogates both the relationship between musical artefacts and the histories we build from them, and that between sound and inscription.
