PhD Student, Department of the History of Art

Kate Werwie is a third-year PhD student in History of Art studying Romanesque and Gothic sculpture from France and Germany. Her work addresses the relationship between monumental sculpture located on the exteriors of churches and the surrounding landscape. She is particularly interested in the capacity of sculptural programs to communicate and inscribe social hierarchy and enforce behavior. She also studies issues of medieval visuality and monastic practices of visual engagement with art.
