Ben Card is a PhD candidate in English and Early Modern Studies. His dissertation, tentatively called “Fictions of English Heresy, 1625-89,” studies allegations of wrong religion, especially those tinged with the suggestion of international conspiracy. He looks at the many genres out of which heresy gets read, such as the poem, the letter, the reading list, and the theological commonplace book, as well as the forms in which heresy-hunters make their allegations: the scurrilous pamphlet, the licensed refutation, the university act, and the heresy catalogue.
