February 10, 2018
The Vatican recently recognized Jackson history professor Timothy Snyder with its Distinction of the Blessed Martyr Omelian Kovch, named for a Ukrainian Greek Catholic priest who rescued Jews as the Germans burned the synagogue in his town.

Snyder received the honor for his “devoted work in revealing to the world the truth about the turmoil of Ukrainian history” and for “personal moral and scholarly integrity in the time of post-truth and of the return of authoritarian tyranny.”

The Distinction is awarded “for significant contributions to the cause of ecumenical dialogue, to the dialogue of cultures and nations, to interreligious and international reconciliation, as well as for a personal example of dedication, beneficence, and humanism.”

Congratulations, Tim!
