In her talk entitled “Investigative Journalism & Democracy in Turbulent Times: The Role of Media to Track Corruption Across Borders,” Pilar Velasco discusses the importance of investigative journalism and its impact on democracy, institutional quality, and civic political engagement and polarization. Velasco addresses her experiences as a journalist at Cadena SER (Prisa Group) with a focus on exposing political and economic malpractices and uncovering high profile international corruption cases. Those reports have revealed unlawful and unethical activities of the most powerful that act against the general public interests. Velasco also details the benefits of networks across borders. She has published two books in Spanish and two essays in German about the challenges faced by democracy in the context of economic crisis.
