Event description:

The concert will pay homage to four female vocalists whose work was significant in the evolution of post-Ottoman music on both sides of the Aegean coast from its roots in Smyrna’s Café Aman and Rebetika. A reflection of their Asia Minor origins and of the multicultural texture of late Ottoman musical traditions, Rosa Eskenazi, Stella Haskil, Marika Ninou and Marika Papangika represent the coming together of four vital cultures (Greek, Jewish, Turkish, and Armenian) that once invigorated the region, particularly in the cosmopolitan centers of Istanbul and Smyrna. Performing in Greek, Turkish, and Armenian, the four interpreters left an indelible mark on the development of local music and their melismatic style remains the exemplary for singers to this day.
